Annotations

Annotations are the parts of a document you want to keep: highlights, notes, and saved takeaways.

Highlights

Open a document in the reader, select a passage, and choose Highlight.

Choose passages you want to come back to later: a useful idea, a definition, a quote, a step, a number, or something you want to remember.

If highlighting is not available yet, wait until Highlight appears in the reader.

Work with a highlight

Saved highlights appear inside the reader. Click a highlight to:

• Add or edit a note.
• Delete the highlight.

If a page changes later, Recalio may not always be able to scroll to the exact old spot, but your saved highlight can still appear in your notes and Highlights page.

Notes

There are two kinds of notes:

• A document note belongs to the whole article or file.
• A highlight note belongs to one highlighted passage.

Use document notes for overall thoughts. Use highlight notes for quick context, reminders, questions, or why the passage mattered.

Notes save automatically after a short pause.

AI highlights

Open Annotations in the reader and choose Auto Mark with AI when available. This is a Pro feature.

AI highlights suggest passages that may be worth remembering. Review them like any other highlight. Keep the useful ones and delete anything that does not help you.

AI highlights use the document text; see the privacy policy for how Recalio handles AI processing.

Annotations panel

Open the annotations panel from the reader to work with one document’s notes and highlights in one place.

From the panel you can:

• Read and edit the document note.
• See all highlights for the document.
• Search within those highlights.
• Filter highlights by type.
• Jump back to a highlighted passage.
• Copy or delete a highlight.
• Export notes and highlights.

Highlights page

Click Highlights in the main navigation to browse highlights across your library.

Highlights are grouped by document so you can see which article or file they came from. Open a highlight to jump back to the reader, or use the menu to edit its note or delete it.

Browser extension highlights

The browser extension can also highlight directly on web pages you have already saved.

When the extension recognizes the saved page, select text on the page and save it as a highlight. Those highlights appear in the reader, Highlights page, export, and Recall.

Export

Use the export menu in the annotations panel when you want your notes and highlights somewhere else.

You can:

• Copy as Markdown.
• Copy as plain text.
• Download a Markdown file.

Exports include the document title, document note, highlights, and highlight notes.

Deleting

Deleting a highlight removes it from the reader, annotations panel, Highlights page, export, and Recall.

Deleting a document also removes its notes and highlights, because they belong to that document.
